*The reason a Xenon bulb rated at 35W can produce more light than an H3 halogen bulb rated at 100W comes down to the efficiency and technology of the two light sources.

1. Technology Differences

• H3 Halogen Bulbs: Halogen bulbs, like the H3, use a tungsten filament that is heated to high temperatures to produce light. While halogen bulbs are a step up from traditional incandescent bulbs, they still generate a significant amount of heat. This means much of the electrical power (100W in this case) is wasted as heat, and the efficiency of converting electricity to visible light is relatively low.
• Xenon Bulbs (HID): Xenon (or HID – High-Intensity Discharge) bulbs use a completely different technology. Instead of a filament, they generate light by passing an electrical arc through ionised xenon gas. This arc produces a much more intense and efficient light source. Xenon bulbs are far more energy-efficient, converting a higher percentage of their 35W of power directly into visible light.

2. Luminous Efficiency

• Luminous efficiency refers to how much light (measured in lumens) is produced per watt of electricity. Xenon bulbs are much more efficient than halogen bulbs. On average, a 35W Xenon bulb can produce around 3,000 to 3,500 lumens, while a 100W halogen bulb might produce around 1,500 to 1,700 lumens.
• As a result, despite consuming only 35W, Xenon bulbs provide nearly twice the brightness of a 100W H3 halogen bulb.

3. Light Colour and Perception

• Xenon bulbs also produce light with a higher colour temperature (typically around 4,300K to 6,000K), which is closer to daylight. This cooler, whiter light is easier for the human eye to see, making objects appear clearer and more defined, even at lower wattages.
• Halogen bulbs, on the other hand, produce a warmer, more yellowish light (around 3,200K). While effective, this warmer light can appear dimmer to the human eye in comparison to the sharp, white light of Xenon bulbs.

Conclusion

In summary, Xenon bulbs are brighter than H3 halogen bulbs because they use more efficient technology that produces more light per watt of electricity.
